about

There was for sure a gold rush mood like in old Western movies, the only difference was it was the wild, wild East. People literally made money out of the dirt. I had a friend who made a fortune selling parts of the wall to collectors all over the world He would buy old East German “Trabbis” for an apple and egg and exported them to the USA where some people used these crappy little cars as garden gnomes. A sign of the ideological victory of Capitalism over the much-hated Socialism.
Vast parts of East Berlin were still in the same condition as after World War II. Many old buildings right in the middle of the city had been abandoned for ages and now attracted young people seeking adventure. They would go and look for a few days if there was any activity in the building and if not, they would open the doors and check out what could be done there. For around two years there was some kind of anarchy going on as the former East German police had no idea which laws to implement in their districts.
For the electronic music and rave scene, it was a blank check. The liberties we enjoyed, the empty spaces in the city, and the sudden freedom of an entire nation allowed Berlin to become the capital city of clubbing worldwide. Without the fall of the Wall, I am 100% sure that Berlin would have had a much smaller role to play worldwide. West German laws would have never accepted the proliferation of clubs in the highly organized West part of the city or even country.
All the regulations meant nothing in the East and that made things affordable for people with a little money to kick start things right away. I am extremely happy that I witnessed those days as they showcase that a non-violent revolution is possible. For a short period in history, we had the feeling that humanity is choosing the right path. And to celebrate that we danced our butts off.
